James Jusei (Jim) Miyashiro was born in 1920. He was the fourth of the 12 children.

Jim graduated from Lahainaluna and later went on to receive a B.S. in chemical engineering from Indiana Technical Institute in Fort Wayne in 1943.

Pearl Leone Hyman was born in 1921 in New York City to Jewish immigrant parents. Pearl graduated high school in the Bronx and worked for the government during the War.

Jim and Pearl met in Chicago and married in 1949. They had two children, Marc (1950) and Theresa (1953), or "Tee".

They raised their children in Woodstock, Illinois, where Jim worked as a research chemist. He held several patents for chemical processes and contributed to the foundational technologies underlying the silicon chip revolution.

Pearl was active in the community and as an empty-nester, she returned to school to earn an advanced degree.

In later years they lived in Yorba Linda, California.
